THOF is predominantly made of young dynamic Cameroonians from diverse disciplines yawning to improve the status of local food systems. These include professionals with the following background: Ecology and Biodiversity, Botany and Horticulture, Animal Production, Agriculture, Agronomy, Fisheries, Economics and Law as well as Local Agriculture Practicing Farmers. We harness the potential of horticulture to create sustainable job opportunities and ensure food security across Africa. We believe in the transformative power of plants to not only feed communities but also to provide meaningful and rewarding employment for the youth.

Empowering Through Horticulture

THOF is dedicated to promoting horticulture as a means to achieve economic stability, environmental sustainability, and improved quality of life. As a body, we are focused in the following areas.

OUR PROGRAMS

Each year the organization runs five key developmental programs in targeted communities within its sphere of operation. These operations are part of the organization’s mission which is to impact the communities within its operational scope.

The agri-wellness program aims to build a healthy community and a productive economy. From the tenet that “a healthy population makes a healthy economy” the program seeks to build community resilience by ensuring the population is drilled on healthy food practices by promoting healthy food production, teach basic techniques healthy lifestyle – eating essential food sources to nourish the body, and finally avoiding abuse of agrochemicals in
agriculture systems.

The vegetables, fruit, and spice economy in Cameroon and the subregion is an essential part of the food system and must not be undermined. Therefore, this program aims to train, develop and promote entrepreneurial capacities particularly for women and young girls to earn a livelihood and decent employment from this sector. The age-old sector has been informal for too long for our liking and with the present dispensation of things with modernization and the internet (digital marketing), we believe this area should be harness (professionalized) to improve the livelihood of the African population.

This program aims to bring awareness and promote sustainable systems in agriculture fields. Many agriculture production systems have poor planning and drainage systems. This degrades the soil and pollutes nearby waters; however, modern approaches and designs are being promoted to improve irrigation and grow healthy soil to improve agriculture fields. Also, the excessive run-off in agriculture fields can be channeled and reused in a sustainable system, thus we design systems for smallholders in Africa to improve their fields.

Literature shows that cities with over a million people have doubled over the last two decades and will keep rising in the future. Also, urban pollution and health hazard are observed to be severe in cities with little or no green infrastructure. This has in effect caused an increase in health deterioration for individuals living in cities. Hence, green infrastructure and urban conservation are relevant in the future to bridge the gap between people and nature and improve urban health. We, therefore, engage city planners and the city council’s authority to develop green cities and improve urban preservation/conservation in Africa for future healthy cities.

Communication is vital for every aspect of this emerging market of today. So, we develop the capacity on communicating agriculture facts and related issues in food systems.
